UAE is taking initial steps towards full integration of renewable energy into housing projects in an ambitious move that will entrench energy mix within homes.
The Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme held a co-ordination meeting with International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Dubai recently to discuss the project and to review the progress made.
The programme aims to achieve the ambitious vision of providing sustainable housing, said Eng. Jamilia Al Fendi, Director General of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme.
The meeting, which was also attended by several senior executives for local and international entities discussed various ways to leverage IRENA’s global experience to promote the use of solar energy in homes across UAE and in developing the relevant policies and regulations.
They also reviewed the IRENA’s role in the renewable energy sector in the world in general and in support of the UAE in particular, as well as the large role it could play in the housing programmes to increase the solar energy capacity in the UAE.
In November, the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme launched the first renewable energy project for government houses by installing solar panels in the parking lots in the new residential areas.
A joint working team has been formed by the programme and the ministry of public works to undertake a feasibility study of the solar project to determine its applicability in future housing projects.
