Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) has announced that it is set to take a 50% share in a 205.5 MW wind project in the Midwestern United States, from a subsidiary of France’s EDF. The Lakefield wind project, located in Minnesota, is fully operational and comprises 137 1.5MW GE wind turbines.
“The Lakefield acquisition is a first step in the evolution of TAQA’s global strategy for alternative energy sources. It complements our existing assets in North America and gives us a foothold in the fast-growing global wind market. The knowledge and international footprint established with this transaction will enable us to take a leading role in developing other international projects,” said Dr Saif Al Sayari, head of TAQA’s Energy Solutions division.
Electricity from the Lakefield site is sold to Indianapolis Power & Light Company under a 20 year power purchase agreement. EDF will continue to provide operation, maintenance and related services to the site.
TAQA launched its Energy Solutions division in January of last year as a means to invest in alternative energy projects around the world.
