Rectiformer upgrades shatter efficiency records
ABB boosts efficiency at Oman and Qatar smelters
Power generation specialist ABB has boosted energy efficiency by 18% at two GCC aluminium smelters.
The high-power convertors (rectiformers), which ABB says are the biggest and most powerful ever built, are based at the Sohar aluminium smelter in Oman and the Qatalum smelter in Qatar.
At the heart of each smelter are five exceptionally powerful ABB rectiformers, each weighing more than 400 tonnes and designed to enable the plants to operate in all conditions, including ‘worst-case’ scenarios.
ABB’s role in the development of rectiformers has been crucial. The company has extended the voltage limit from 1200 volts DC to 1650 V DC for Sohar and 2000 V DC for Qatalum.
As a result, aluminium smelters now need only five rectiformers instead of six, explaining ABB’s ability to increase energy efficiency by 18%.
