Total: 11% of electricity from solar by 2050
Forecast realistic if stakeholders play their part, says renewables VP
Oil major Total believes an International Energy Agency (IEA) forecast that solar power will constitute 11 percent of global power generation by 2050 is realistic if all stakeholders play their part towards achieving this goal.
The IAE prediction is based on the scenario that annual growth of the solar sector will average at 20 percent in the coming decades. These growth figures can become reality if all preconditions are met, according to Total.
"Governments, consumers and business all have a role to play in the growth of the solar industry. Governments will have to implement policies to support solar energy; consumers need to actively choose solar energy; and businesses must develop the necessary technology and make the necessary investments,” says Arnaud Chaperon, vice president of electricity and renewable energies.
The Middle East is well positioned to profit from and contribute to increasing solar power generation. According to a recent survey by Booz & Co, the MENA region has the potential to offer 45 percent of the world's total renewable energy generation.
