The completion date of Masdar City has been pushed back to 2020.

Masdar has announced the commencement of work on the second phase of its Institute of Science and Technology campus.

According to a statement, the new building complex is 35 percent larger than the current facility measuring a 82,000 sq m. The second phase of work will include the construction of more than 200 student apartments, seven laboratories, a multi-use hall and swimming pool and gym.

Abu Dhabi real estate developer Aldar will be responsible for the project's execution and cost control. The general construction contract for the development has been awarded to the Arabian Construction Company.
Construction is anticipated to take approximately 18 months, the statement said.

In a statement, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, managing director and CEO, Masdar said: “The commencement of work on the second phase of the Masdar Institute campus reflects the steady progress we are making at Masdar City.”

Masdar, the world’s first carbon-neutral city, delayed final completion of the development until at least 2020, four years after its original deadline, in October.

Alan Frost, director of Masdar City, said the Masdar Institute works are set to be completed in 2012.
