Dow is keeping the cows cool
Dow & Veolia supply filtration for dairy's wastewater plant
Dow Water & Process Solutions has supplied the ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis components that are processing the waste water at Al Ain Dairy, a UAE dairy producer, through original equipment manufacturer Veolia.
Most of the recycled water is being used to maintain a cool and comfortable environment for the Dairy’s herd of 2,500 cows.
Dow’s Ultrafiltration modules and FILMTEC™ reverse osmosis elements ensure that more than 300,000 cubic liters of water is filtered daily, the company says in a news release. The treated waste water product is then reused in various applications, namely being sprayed as a cool mist through an automated cooling system designed to keep the 2,500 resident cows and calves cool and comfortable during the summer season, thereby maintaining optimal dairy production levels.
The recycled treated waste water produced is used for various irrigation and cleaning needs, while the majority is cooled and sprayed on the cows to maintain a “cool” 25-30ºC environment even in the peak of summer.
“This is a fantastic example of private and public sector collaboration, of how technology can drive change, and of how sustainability makes good business sense. There is a sustainable role for our water business in this region, and with the right technologies, we are turning our customers’ challenges into opportunities,” says Ilham Kadri, General Manager for Dow Advanced Materials Division, Middle East and Africa.
