ABB wins substation contract in Qatar
Turnkey project to be ready in around 14 months.
ABB has won an order to supply two new substations to the Ezdan Real Estate Company, one of Qatar’s biggest property developers, the company announced on Tuesday.
A 132/11 kV substation will supply power to two new shopping centres, the Al Gharaffa and Gulf malls being built in Doha, to serve the emirate’s fast-growing retail market. A second 66/11 kV substation, EZDAN-5, will serve a new residential area. The project is scheduled to be completed in around 14 months.
As part of the turnkey project, ABB will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, construction and commissioning of the substations. The compact design and footprint of the substations makes them ideal for densely populated urban areas where space is limited, says the company in a press release. ABB will also supply gas-insulated and medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, low-voltage auxiliary systems and power cables.
The substations will be equipped with IEC 61850 compliant automation, control and protection solutions. IEC 61850 is an international communications standard that ensures interoperability and open communications between substation devices and other grid installations.
