Emirates District Cooling (Emicool), a district cooling service provider in the region, has been awarded a multimillion concession contract for 25 years as the exclusive supplier to provide full-fledged district cooling service system for Akoya by Damac project.

The contract covers chilled water system for all residential buildings within the development.

Emicool will deliver 15,340 tonnes of refrigeration (TR) chilled water from its plant at Hessah Street to the Akoya site through pipes, valve chambers and heat exchangers stations. The new contract, which will cater to more than 2,500 customers once the project is complete, is set to increase Emicool’s productive capacity by five per cent escalating the refrigerating tonnes per hour (RTH) production to 440 million RTH by the end of 2017.

Apart from providing chilled water, Emicool will also supply the British Thermal Unit [BTU] meters to the Akoya buildings to monitor and measure the energy usage and carry out billing services once the buildings are occupied.

Adib Moubadder, CEO of Emicool, said: “The demand for district cooling services across the UAE continues to rise amidst burgeoning construction. The benefits of district cooling are evident and master planners are increasingly incorporating district cooling systems in their projects. As one of the leading players in the domain, Emicool is consistently augmenting its capacity.”

The Akoya project will provide a major push to Emicool’s planned capacity expansion to over 500,000 TR by 2020 as rampant construction is leading to pent-up demand for district cooling services across the UAE and region. The company’s roadmap in the coming years includes expansion of operations to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Adib added: “In today’s business environment challenges, innovation in the production, delivery and consumption of chilled water and energy is becoming increasingly important. District cooling is a constantly evolving industry and the centralized system is more economical and sustainable than conventional air conditioning infrastructure.”

Akoya spans 42 million square feet and is home to a mansions, villas, apartments, hotels and resorts, golf club and four million square feet of lush greenery.

For the project, Emicool has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Al Nasr Contracting for Dh50 million to design and build the pipeline network and valve chambers.
