DEWA launches summer peak load campaign
Utility urges residents to conserve electricity between 12 and 6pm.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched the ‘Change begins with us’ campaign as part of its annual Peak Load campaign to reduce electricity and water use during peak hours, from 12-6pm.
The campaign raises environmental awareness among Dubai residents and encourages them to adopt a sustainable way of living in using electricity and water to conserve natural resources, protect the environment and reduce the Emirate’s carbon footprint.
Individuals are urged to limit using appliances that consume a lot of electricity such as irons, washing and dryer machines, dishwashers, water heaters, and electric ovens during peak-load hours. DEWA encourages the public to use them in the mornings or evenings whenever possible to reduce pressure on the electricity network.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said: “Reducing electricity use during peak-load hours contributes to improving the efficiency and reliability of the transmission and distribution networks and helps reduce the amount of fuel needed to produce energy.”
A survey conducted by DEWA last year found that 93% of participants were ready and willing to implement it in their homes and workplaces.
Using electrical appliances and equipment during peak-load hours during the summer months adds to the load on the power grid.
By launching the Peak Load campaign, DEWA informs customers about ways to contribute to reducing the load on the power-generation system by using electrical devices during off-peak hours.
For example, air-conditioning uses 60% of the total electricity load. Reducing air-conditioning use or increasing the temperature even slightly, benefits customers by reducing their electricity bills, and increases the overall efficiency of the electrical system.
