Oman floats consultancy tender for new IWP
Contract to study the best location for new desalination plant in Barka.
Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has floated a tender inviting bids from consultancy firms for conducting a study to identify the best sea¬water intake and outfall location for a new independent water project (IWP) planned in Barka, the Oman Times reports.
The deadline for submitting offers bids to identify best location is on February 22, the newspaper said citing unnamed sources.
This will be the biggest IWP in Oman and a tender to pre¬qualify companies (RfQ) to participate in developing the IWP would be floated either this week or next week.
The new project is aimed at substantially enhancing availability of potable water in the country's northern region. Demand for potable water in Oman's northern region is projected to grow by 6%
Two independent power and water projects, ¬ACWA Power Barka and SMN Power, have their own desalination plants in Barka.
ACWA Power has a capacity to generate 114,000 cubic metres per day (m3/d) and the company is implementing an expansion project to enhance the capacity by another 47,000 m3/d. SMN Power has a water desalination capacity of 98,000 m3/d.
