Saudi Arabian power plant developer and operator Acwa Power has announced that its listed Oman subsidiary, Acwa Power Barka, has received a letter of award from Oman's Power and Water Procurement (OPWP) Company to build a new plant to deliver desalinated water.

The plant will be capable of delivering 12.5mn imperial gallons of water per day (MIGD) and is part of a phase 2 expansion of its operations in Barka, where it already runs a plant delivering 91,200m3 of water per day and 427MW of power.

The gas-fired power plant began operations in 2003, and cost $415mn to build. Acwa Power holds a 58% stake in the plant, with a further 35% of shares in public hands and the remainder held by Multitech.

Announcing the letter of award, Acwa Power Barka said that its delivery "will not only result in value creation for all shareholders but also support the national grid with the provision of clean and reliable water".

The Barka 1 plant is situated around 60km from Muscat and the partners have a 15-year supply agreement in place with OPWP.
