Qatar closes on new 2,400MW power and water plant
QEWC expects to award contract within three months, reports say.
Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) is to expand its capacity with a new power and water plant, according to local media reports.
The company plans to build a new plant in Umm Al Haul with an installed capacity of 2,400MW of power and 130 mn gallons of desalinated water per day.
The plan was announced by QEWC’s general manager, Fahad Al Muhannadi, during an interview with Al Sharq newspaper.
“We expect to award the contract within the next three months. Four companies have expressed interest to participate in the bidding process,” Al Muhannadi said.
Qatar’s current power generation capacity is around 8,700 MW, while the expected peak load during summer this year is about 6,800 MW.
