Sharjah launches new $120mn desalination plant
Emirate unveils facility with 20 MIGD capacity at Al Hamriya complex.
Sharjah has kickstarted operations at a new 20 million gallons per day (MIGD) desalination plant at Al Hamriya.
The AED 446mn ($120mn) facility was opened on Sunday by Dr Rashid Obaid Jumaa Al Leem, chairman of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa).
An AED 140mn project for construction of deep sea water intake and pump house to feed the new plant has also been completed.
Al Leem said the new plant is one of the strategic projects initiated by Sewa to meet the water requirements of the Hamriyah Free Zone Authority, Emirates Industrial City and residents of Sharjah.
The desalination plant is part of the Hamriya power and water conplex which has a capacity of 2,500 MW and 140 MIGD.
