Kahramaa dishes out $136mn cable contract
French manufacturer Nexans wins deal to upgrade Qatari grid.
Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has signed a EUR 100 mn ($136.4mn) supply contract with Nexans for medium and low voltage cables.
The French manufacturer will provide over 2,000 kilometres of cables through its local subsidiary Qatar International Cables Company until December 2015.
The move is part of stage 2 of the phase 11 expansion of the Qatari power grid and will connect new sub-stations to major Doha infrastructure projects such as the port, rail and metro.
Kahramaa is upgrading the grid to handle increased power demand which is expected to grow by almost 50% by 2020 to 9.6 GW.
