Dow is showcasing its Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) solutions at Menasol 2014, which takes place in Dubai this week.

Amongst the items on show is Dowtherm A, a high temperature heat transfer fluid capable of accommodating temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius. According to Dow, it is used in over 35 major CSP projects around the world.

CSP technology uses parabolic mirrors to reflect and magnify heat from the sun onto a closed circulating loop containing the Dowtherm A heat transfer fluid. The fluid collects the heat energy and transports it to a power station where it is used to produce steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity.

“Harnessing and utilizing solar energy is now more affordable, more efficient and more reliable than ever. Hence it is no surprise that the Middle East region, with its abundance of sunlight has been witnessing significant investment and rapid growth in the solar energy sector,” said Carolina Barrios, market development manager for Dow Heat Transfer Fluids.

“At Dow, with our total solutions offering for CSP, we are excited at the opportunities in this market and are committed to helping the region meet its long term solar ambitions.”

CSP technology is used in Masdar’s Shams 1 solar plant in Abu Dhabi. Dubai’s Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park uses photovoltaic panels, which turn heat directly into electricity.
