MEDC becomes the first company in Oman to use prepaid metres

The Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) has launched an optional prepaid electricity metre service ‘SABIQ’, the Times of Oman reported. The MEDC becomes the first company in Oman to use the prepaid electricity service with this launch.

MEDC said that the service has been technically tested and approved as fit for use in the sultanate. The company has completed technical preparations for receiving applications from subscribers for the new service.

The prepaid metres will allow customers monitor their power consumption on an hourly, daily and monthly basis. The service is an innovative way to control electricity consumption without having to wait for the monthly invoices or line up at queues for payment of bills. The service is part of a series of initiatives to improve customer services and to facilitate communication between company and the subscribers.

Abdullah bin Said Al Badri, chief executive officer of the MEDC, said that the launch of the prepaid meter service was in line with the company's efforts to make use of new technologies to improve services and exercise better control on electricity consumption.
