Duqm IWPP tendering process to launch in April
Next step towards completion of coal-fired plant takes place
Law firm Simmons & Simmons has won a contract to provide advisory services to the Omani government in the development of the coal-fired Duqm IWPP.
The company joins KPMG (lead/financial advisor) and Australia’s WorleyParsons (technical adviser) on the project.
The move is significant as Simmons & Simmons will now work to draft the project documents for Duqm, which is earmarked to have a power generation capacity of 1,000MW, as well as a desalination element.
Duqm is on course to be the first coal-fired power plant in the GCC, offering power to not only the local area, but also to the north of Oman as well, via the country’s Main Interconnection System (MIS), according to the Oman Daily Observer newspaper.
The daily also reported that Oman plans to launch the tendering process in April 2010, with the request for proposals set for September 2010. It is likely to be awarded in August 2011, with full commercial operation set for January 2016.
