Utico to tender RAK utility projects worth $450mn
RAK is expected to issue further tenders for power transmission
Utico, the private utility company responsible for power and water in the UAE emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), has announced that it will tender two utility projects worth a total of US$450m in the near future.
One of the tenders concerns a project to supply 20MW of solar power while the other relates to a water project to supply approximately 22MIGD – part of its attempts to meet a forecast demand of 100MIGD in the coming years.
A top Utico official said the opening of the tenders to all companies in the region and beyond would ensure sustainable growth in the emirate as well as enable a mix of developers and technology providers to participate in a profitable and sustainable manner.
The tenders follow the recent initiative taken by the RAK Sewage Authority for privatising the emirate’s sewerage services which saw several international companies participate in the tender.
RAK is also expected to issue further tenders worth millions of dollars for transmission and distribution, storage tanks, and pumping stations in the coming months.
Major tenders will also be out once the construction of the $550m clean coal power project gets underway early next year. The project is the first of its kind in the world, and once complete, it will generate of over 270MW power.
Power and water projects have assumed greater significance in RAK in recent years given the emirate’s drive to achieve total self-sufficiency and support of private initiatives.
