Worth a combined $38 billion, these mammoth schemes represent the most obvious examples of the continued buoyancy of the market, and look set to bolster both the power and water sectors well into the next decade. 1 Barakah Nuclear Plant

Country: UAE
Project Value: $20bn
Client: Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC)

With construction on the first two reactors well underway, and licence applications for the second two 1,400 MW units currently being considered, this regional mega-project is well and truly out of the blocks. First power is still scheduled for 2017, with additional APR-1400 units coming online each year thereafter. When complete, the substantial output is set to both bolster Abu Dhabi’s own generation capacity, as well as providing export potential to other emirates.

2 Yanbu Phase 3

Country: Saudi Arabia

Client: Marafiq / SWCC

The biggest conventional power and water project currently underway in the Middle East, this giant scheme will see the construction of a 3.1 GW power plant, together with a an attached $1bn desalination plant with a reported 121 million gallons per day capacity output. Recent news from the scheme has seen a consortium led by Samsung Engineering sign a deal that will see the firm work on engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning at the facility.

3 Al Zour North IWPP

Client: Partnerships Technical Bureau/Ministry of Electricity and Water

A GDF-SUEZ led consortium won ‘successful bidder’ for the Al Zour project back in January, and is now set to work on the scheme to add 1.5 GW of electricity capacity to the Kuwaiti grid. An associated desalination plant is planned to have an output of between 102 and 107 million gallons per day. When finished, the project will amount to a very substantial 12% of Kuwait’s installed generation capacity, together with 23% of its desalination capacity.

4 Jizan Refinery Power Plant

Country: Saudi Arabia

This enormous project at Saudi Aramco’s Jizan refinery and terminal will see the construction of a substantial power site capable of providing power for the world’s largest gasifier project, in addition to exporting 2.4 GW of electricity to Jizan Economic City. The project is located on Saudi’s south-west coast.

5 Mirfa IWPP

With an impressive 1,500 MW power output, and a 53 million gallons per day desalinated water capacity, it is only the presence of the UAE’s Barakah project that keeps the Mirfa project somewhat in the shade. Scheduled for completion in 2015, this giant is a key part of immediate efforts to meet Abu Dhabi’s rapidly rising energy demands – currently pegged at 11% growth per year. An announcement on which of the six pre-qualified consortiums will undertake the scheme is expected by the middle of this year.

6 PP12 Power Plant

Capacity of this Saudi Electricity Company scheme is set to be close to 2 GW, and will start production in 2015. GE is supplying eight of its 7F 5-series gas turbine generators for the expansion project, which will reportedly become the largest air-cooled combined-cycle project in the Kingdom when it enters full service. Saudi Aramco is set to provide the plant with natural gas, and the turbines are reportedly set to be equipped with dry low NOx combustion technology to help lower emissions and extend maintenance intervals.

8 Qatar Solar Power Plant

Client: Qatar General Electricity & Water Authority

With some of the highest solar irradiation levels on the planet, Qatar’s planned investment in solar power appears to be a sensible use of an evident resource. Some studies have suggested the country has the capability to produce over 6kWh per square metre, per day, during summer peaks in July and August, with a significant potential throughout the cooler months. This sort of capacity will be needed, if the country is to meet its bold plans for a green World Cup 2022.

12 Qurayyah Block 6

The Block 6 project, scheduled for completion sometime this year, is aiming to add 800 MW of generation capacity to the Qurayyah site. Scope of the work involved includes three 7FA GE gas turbines, fire protection and HVAC systems, as well as the water supply system and a hydrogen plant. Arabian Bemco Contracting has been named as the main contractor on the project.

13 Ras Abu Fontas A2

Country: Qatar

Mitsubishi Corporation and Toyo Thai Corp. won the contract to build this 36 million gallons per day seawater desalination plant. The scheme is set to be built on a full turn-key basis, and will then be operated and maintained by Qatar Electricity and Water Company. Mitsubishi is set to install seawater desalination plant facilities, with Toyo Thai responsible for the rest of plant equipment – such as seawater intake and boiler installations.

14 Rabigh Independent Water Steam Power Project – Phase 2

15 Salalah 2 IPP

With a planned generating capacity of 250 MW, the new plant at Salalah is aimed at helping to meet Oman’s 10% annual demand growth for power. The scheme is currently targeting a 2016 completion date, with some reports also suggesting the site will produce around 10 million gallons of water per day when completed

16 Riyadh-Makkah Power Interconnector

With power demand increasing rapidly in both cities, this key project to linkthe two grids has become increasingly critical. Expected to have a capacity of over 3GW, the 800 kilometre, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link will help balance grid loads at peak times. So far, no contractor has been named, although CESI has been appointed to provide consultancy assistance on the development of the scheme.

17 O&M Shuaiba Power and Desalination Plant

Located around 40 kilometres from Kuwait City, the Shuaiba plant has a 780MW capacity, together with a 45 million gallons per day water output. Operating since 2010, a joint venture between TNB REMACO and Kharafi National were awarded the operation and maintenance contract in January of this year.
