ABB has been awarded a contract to design and build 420kV high voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS) that will help support the supply of power to a new desalination facility in Yanbu Industrial City, Saudi Arabia.

The deal, received from the EPC firm Al Fanar Group, will see ABB work on the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) project, which is set for commissioning in June 2014. When completed, the plant will have output capacity of 550,000 cubic metres of desalinated water per day.

“These new plants where ABB’s highly reliable GIS equipment is being installed, will help address the country’s increasing need for potable water and also support the growing demand for electricity,” said Giandomenico Rivetti, head of the company’s High Voltage products business.
