Dow and SWCC to collaborate on research
Pair signs commercial agreement for regional desalination solutions
Dow Chemical Company and Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) have announced that they have signed a commercial agreement to collaborate on research into desalination technologies suitable for regional conditions. The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreed between the pair back in March of this year to look into desalination technology.
Under the agreement, Dow and SWCC will test cutting-edge desalination technologies developed by Dow Water & Process Solutions, and assess how they perform in the environment of the Arabian Gulf – including their ability to withstand factors such as high salinity and temperature.
Testing is set to be undertaken in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, by the Saline Water Desalination Research Institute (SWDRI) over the course of one year.
“We are looking forward to this opportunity to test the effectiveness of Dow’s innovative ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technologies in the conditions we work with, in the Arabian Gulf. As the sole producer of desalinated water in Saudi Arabia, we are looking at cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to boost our operational efficiencies and the quality of our product. Our decision to partner with Dow and explore the possibility of introducing new, more effective technologies, reflects this commitment,” said SWDRI Director Dr Ibrahim Al Tisan.
SWCC is the largest desalinated water producer in the world, running 32 plants that produce 18% of the planet’s desalinated water.
