Saudi Arabian EPC firm Al Toukhi Group has awarded ABB a contract valued at over US $40 million for the provision of high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear. The 420kV GIS equipment will form a crucial part of the New Muhayil West and Al Omran substations being constructed for Saudi Electricity Company, scheduled for completion in June 2014.

New Muhayil, connected to the Shuqaiq and Namera North transmission grids, is under construction to help meet demand in Saudi’s southwest. Al Omran, in the east of the country, forms part of the Qurayyah Independent Power Project currently being built.

“The new substations where this GIS equipment will be installed, will enhance power capacity and help meet growing electricity demand to support industrial development in the country,” explains ABB’s head of Power Products, Bernhard Jucker.
