ABB has announced it has won orders valued at about US $24 million to provide a new 380kV outdoor gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation at Saudi Arabia’s Ras Al Khair power plant. The site will export 800 MW of power to the national grid to power a new aluminium smelter run by Ma’aden Aluminium Company.

“This substation will enhance power capacity and improve quality and reliability of supply for critical processes and sustained productivity at the new aluminium plant. Our advanced technologies, project management capability and extensive experience are key factors when executing such fast-track projects,” said ABB’s substation business head Oleg Aleinikov.

The scope of ABB’s work will include communication and auxiliary systems, and IEC 61850 compliant substation automation, control and protection.

Ma’aden, together with Alcoa, is building an integrated aluminium mining, refining, smelting and rolling mill facility at Ras Al Khair.
