International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) director general Adnan Amin has signed the IRENA Headquarters agreement in Abu Dhabi, an important step in formalising the relationship between the Agency and the UAE. Signing the agreement with UAE Minister of State Dr Anwar Gargash, the IRENA agreement now incorporates Abu Dhabi’s designation as the permanent seat for the Agency.

Speaking on the event, Adnan Amin said, “Today’s agreement is historic. It formalises the permanent Headquarters of IRENA and its relationship with the UAE, hosting the first international organization in the region. It provides the firm basis for the mission of IRENA to support the rapid deployment of renewable energy as a central element for international efforts to ensure a sustainable energy future, improve standards of living and strengthen global economies.”

The positioning of IRENA’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi is the first time an international organisation with global membership has been located in the region. IRENA currently has 95 Member States, with 63 more signatories or applicants for membership. The UAE was made a full Member in June 2009.
