Egypt’s energy minister Hassan Yunis has announced that the country will launch a tender offer for a series of wind farms to be installed on the Gulf of Suez, aimed at producing 200 megawatts.

The offer will be for the supply and installation of the farms, in addition to the maintenance, and will represent both the second and third phases of the country’s renewable energy programme. The first phase of the project was signed in July this year, and work on the wind farms is anticipated to begin in April 2014. Financing for the $500 million project will come in part from the European Investment Bank, and the European Commission, and help Egypt on its way to a goal of producing 7,200 megawatts of wind energy by 2020.
