Basra blacks out as temperature soars
Power generation in Basra is insufficient to cool residents
Basra has become the latest Middle Eastern city to be hit by a series of blackouts as temperatures soar to 50 degrees.
Residents without air conditioning are criticizing the country’s ministry of electricity for the power shortages that leave some areas of the country with electricity for just eight hours a day, despite last year signing a $50m deal for a 500 megawatt power plant to solve the problem.
During a similar incident last year, people were killed as demonstrators campaigned for better infrastructure services.
