Desertec, an ambitious renewable energy network that’s planned to power Europe from solar farms in North Africa, has signed up its first government partner.

While private companies have been quick to pledge support, government bodies have been reluctant to get on board. With Morocco planned to be the testing ground for the network, the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the industrial consortium Dii, regarding a cooperation on the project.

The aim is to develop a large solar project in Morocco, which will demonstrate the feasibility of export to Europe, and MASEN will act as the project developer, managing the overall process including project specifications and site location.
