$85 million Saudi GIS deal for ABB
Switchgear for 360kph railway contract awarded by AlFanar Construction
An $85 million deal from AlFanar Construction Company has been won by power and automation group ABB, to supply 380 kV indoor gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to new rail substations in Saudi Arabia.
The 444km high-speed Haramain railway line is currently under construction in the Kingdom, and is expected to reduce road traffic, and also cut the travel time between Medina and Mecca from six hours to two.
Planned to be designed, supplied, installed and commissioned by ABB, the GIS will be operational by the middle of 2013, meeting high standards of reliability, ease of operation, low maintenance costs and environmental benefits.
"Our GIS is extremely robust and designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. It also has a significantly smaller footprint - a distinct advantage for indoor and urban installations such as these," said Bernhard Jucker, head of ABB's Power Products division."The equipment will facilitate the reliable and efficient supply of electricity to power the new rail network."
