Kingdom produces 17% of globe's desalinated water, and plans increases
With 27 major water desalination plants pumping almost 2.8 million cubic metres per day, Saudi Arabia is responsible for more than 17 per cent of the world’s total desalinated water capacity, Emirates 24/7 has reported.
Fuhaid Al Sharif, governor of Saudi Arabia’s general corporation for water desalination, said that the Kingdom is also planning to invite bids for the construction of another giant desalination unit, with a capacity of 550,000 cubic metres, supplying to Madina and nearby regions. The project will also produce 1,700 megawatts of electricity.
