UAE's atomic plans under review
UAE reviews its nuclear ambitions following Fukushima crisis
The United Arab Emirates’s nuclear safety regulator is to conduct a ‘very thorough review’ of the country’s atomic power plans, drawing on lessons from the recent nuclear accident at Japan’s Fukushima power plant.
“Before any plant operation is authorized, a second review, focusing on operational safety, will also be conducted,” William Travers, the director-general of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, told Arabian Business.
“Once we fully understand the details of what has happened in Japan, we will use this information to enhance the safety of the peaceful nuclear power programme here in the UAE.”
