Oman signs five contracts to boost power output

By Andy Sambidge
The Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has signed five deals worth more than US $109 million (RO42 million) to expand its power generation capacity.
While Larsen & Toubro (Oman) (L&T) bagged three projects, estimated at nearly $65 million, the Bahwan Group and Galfar Engineering and Construction won one project each, Times of Oman reported on Tuesday.
Acknowledging the huge demand for power in the Sultanate, OETC is implementing a total of 64 projects in the next five years at an estimated $1.6 billion, Saif bin Abdullah bin Rashid A’Shamri, deputy chairman of the OETC, said.
The projects will help raise number of installed transmitters from 78 in 2009 to 151 in 2014 while the length of transmission lines are expected to go up from 3,523km in 2009 to 5,357 in 2014.
