The Ras Al Zour power plant will be moving beyond the planning and design stage this month.

A Saudi Sino group of Al Arrab Contracting and SepcoIII Electric Power Construction Corp will start building a 2,750 megawatt power plant in Ras Al Zour on the Arabian Gulf in Saudi Arabia this month, the Riyadh based company told Bloomberg.

In a phone interview from Riyadh on Saturday, Samer Arafa, executive vice president, Al Arrab, said: “Construction of the facility will begin right after Eid al Fitr holidays and be finalized in March 2014."

The Muslim holiday of Eid al Fitr ends on Sept 13.
Saudi Arabia’s state controlled Saline Water Conversion Corp awarded the 9.1 billion riyal ($2.4 billion) contract to the Al Arrab led alliance on Sept 1.

Siemens, the project’s sub contractor, will supply steam turbines and power plant equipment, Arafa said.

The project, part of a power and water desalination plant aimed at feeding Riyadh, Hafr Al Batin and Khafji, will provide electric power and thermal steam needed to desalinate 1.025 million cubic meters of water per day, Arafa said.
