Sharjah power woes continue despite SEWA pledge

Power cuts hit Sharjah again on Sunday, despite a pledge from electricity bosses just 24 hours earlier that services would improve.

The latest blackout left Sharjah's industrial areas 2, 6 and 12 were without power from 11am till 2pm, cutting lighting and air conditioning.

Residential areas such as Abu Shagara had no electricity for up to an hour, UAE daily The National reported.

On Sunday, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) apologised for the series of power cuts, adding that it was keen to provide better services to consumers.

It attributed the cuts to a "sudden glitch in natural gas pipeline" and said "utmost efforts would be exerted to prevent repetition of the glitch".

Several days of power cuts have seen hospitals treating four times more victims of heat-stroke than usual, and a construction worker has died from heat exhaustion while businesses also reported significant financial losses.

The paper said the utilities company refused to comment on Sunday’s power cuts.
