Egpyt wants to produce 20 percent of electricity needs from renewables by 2020.
Egypt’s first solar plant will become operational by the end of the year, electricity and energy minister Hassan Younes said in a report published on Monday on his ministry's website.
The plant will be one of only four solar plants in the world with a 140MW capacity, says the report.
The government-run plant south of Cairo will be linked to the national grid as Egypt tries to meet a target of producing 20 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by the end of 2020, Younes had said earlier.
The country's oil and gas reserves are projected to last for another thirty years.
