ABB bags $30mn substation deal for Iraq’s Rumaila power plant

by Baset Asaba on Aug 6, 2017

ABB Group has received an order worth US$30mn to supply and install a substation at the 3,000MW Rumaila power plant in Iraq’s Basra region, with an aim to increase the country’s power generation capacity by 20 per cent

ABB will be responsible for design, engineering, supply and installation of a 400kV air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substation, which will be equipped with advanced digital control, protection and telecommunication systems.

According to the company, the order was booked in the Q2 2017.

The 3,000MW Rumaila power plant will be operated by Shamara Holding Group (SHG), one of Iraq’s largest private industrial conglomerates and an independent power producer. The plant is expected to meet growing electricity demand of the country by adding to Iraq’s current power generation of 13,000MW, which is short of the country’s peak load demand of about 23,000MW.

Currently, the country is managing high power demand and low supply capacity through load shedding, making electricity available to 34mn citizens for about 15 hours each day, thus hampering Iraq’s economic growth. Through the new plants, Iraq hopes to increase electricity supply and support country’s development processes.

ABB is a global supplier of substations with voltage levels up to 1,100kV. The company aims to provide an efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity in utility sector, industrial and commercial customers as well as railways, urban transportation and renewable.

Claudio Facchin, president of power grids division at ABB, said that the company focuses on helping Iraq in addressing electricity demand by expanding capacity and strengthening the country’s power infrastructure.

“This project adds to our extensive installed base in the region and supports our next level strategic thrust on growing markets,” he added.
