The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is taking steps to raise awareness of the use of electricity and water in the country but applying the Qatar Sustainability Assessment System.

A MoU has been signed between Kahramaa, Barwa and Qatari Diar Research institute to create a sustainable built environment in terms of energy and water conservation, according to The Peninsula.

“Our MoU with BQDRI and the deployment of QSAS will allow Kahramaa to take the lead in addressing strategic issues related to Qatar's energy and water efficiency policies, reduction of carbon emissions, minimisation of ecological impacts, and insurance of high indoor environmental quality," Eissa Hilal Al-Kawari, acting manging director of Kahramaa said.

“Partnering with BQDRI's rating system that adheres to international standards and addresses sustainability goals specific to the area, Kahramaa will serve as a premier example for government bodies and companies in Qatar, the region and across the globe," Al Kuwari added.

Qatar aiming to conserve energy and water
What about the existing buildings? Quality of construction is not as good as other GCC countries eg Bahrain, requiring more energy due to air leakage. This has been addressed with new building regs. tho some of the new flats being constructed now are still junk - I live in 1! Insulation is poor, doors/windows not effectively sealed. The biggest single issue is Landlords in Qatar seldom maintain their buildings resulting in huge wastage of water & energy. Our office is an older building on C Ring Rd near Gulf Cinema. Toilets all flush (leak) continually 24/7 & some taps leak - probably in excess of 100,000 l/d wasted in just this 1 small building. Similarly I have a tap running (not leaking, gushing) in my flat. It was replaced yesterday after more than 3 days. I was able to isolate the cold but not the hot water.
