Saudi begins solar water desalination plant work

Saudi Arabia is a prime location for solar power.

Saudi Arabia has started building the first solar-powered water desalination plant, the first step in a three-part program to introduce solar energy into the Kingdom.

The programme, launched by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) aims to help stabilise future power and water supplies inside Saudi Arabia through the creation of solar-powered desalination facilities, it said in a media release on Friday.

Today, Saudi Arabia produces 18 percent of the world's desalinated water.

Great stuff. 1st: KACST was a pioneeer in introducing large scale SOLAR power generation to KSA more tahn 20 years ago (Oyaynah Proj). This is not entirely new. what is the size of the proposed plant , location,water treatment technology used ...this makes the news more meaningful. 2- someone please elighten our fellow raeders on what is IBMs exact technical role in this state of the art technology.Is is pure technical research and in what areas of the technology. thanks
