Consultations begin at Jordan nuclear plant

The first preconstruction consultations on Jordan’s first nuclear power plant began this week, presided over by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and Australian consultant WorleyParsons.

The Jordan Times said that a steering committee had been formed to review the technical, legal and financial issues pertaining to the construction of what it is thought to be a 1,000MW Generation III reactor.

Meanwhile, Amman Daewoo Engineering and Construction Company and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute will build Jordan’s first reactor, which will be used for research and training purposes and which will be online by 2014.

According to the Korea Times, the deal is worth US$173 million and represents Korea’s first export of a locally designed nuclear plant.
