Metito scooped the $9 million contract to improve water treatment infrastructure in Karbala.
Metito scooped the $9 million contract to improve water treatment infrastructure in Karbala.

Metito has announced its latest project in Iraq worth more than US$9 million.

“Iraq is striving to improve infrastructure across the whole country which will create interesting opportunities for the water sector”, insisted Mustafa Hasan, General Manager of Metito Jordan, Iraq and Syria. In fact, Iraq is continuing to move forward with its strategic plans to invest in infrastructure which was clearly reflected in its commitment to invest US$5.3 billion in new projects over the next two years. From such commitment, stems great prospects for the Water and Waste Water Industry and Metito is at a position to leverage its experience, local presence and global knowhow to foster these valuable opportunities.

Metito has recently been awarded a large scale project in Iraq and the Group is adamant to make this project yet another venue through which it can play a role in supporting the great efforts being invested in developing this strategic country.
Keen to enrich its existing portfolio, Metito’s work on this project will see the Group join forces with Balad Al Khebra to upgrade the main Freeha Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in the holy city of Karbala, located approximately 100km South-West of Baghdad. Upon completion in Q4 2012, the development works will see the plant capacity increased to accommodate 60,000m3 of effluent per day.

Commenting on this project, Mohammed Al Ezzi, General Manager Balad Al Khebra, said; “The plant was built in the seventies in the suburbs while it is now considered to be the epicenter of Karbala. The city is witnessing a population growth and an increasing number of visitors which urges the need of such investment into the water infrastructure. Our work will ensure an improved quality of the treated effluent while eliminating odour problems in the surrounding area among other implications”.

Metito’s operations in Iraq spans over 30 years and cover a wide range of large scale projects but this is the first time for Metito to work with Balad Al Khebra, a partner that the Group is honoured to have had the opportunity to work with. This collaboration will make the best use of the wealth of experience both partners own and will build on the operational knowhow which Metito has refined over 50 years of industry expertise.

“The Iraqi Government is committed to improving the lives of the Iraqi people through strategic infrastructure projects and as leaders in the Water and Waste Water industry in the region, Metito has the expertise, local knowledge and a world-class technical knowhow than can ensure delivering the most practical and intelligent water management solutions for such projects”, confirmed Mustafa Hasan.
