A national poll on the subject of nuclear energy in the UAE has revealed that 85 per cent of residents believe it to be important to the country’s future.
Less than a week after the Italian public voted out their nation’s nuclear programme, the UAE poll, commissioned by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, shows that 47 per cent have found themselves increasingly in favour of nuclear energy in the last six months.
The corporation is responsible for the UAE’s first nuclear reactor, Braka, which is intended for completion in 2017. Mohamed Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, said: “The finding demonstrate that UAE residents understand the important role nuclear energy will play in the UAE’s future energy mix. I am encouraged that this study shows a growing number of people understand and support this programme, and that people share our concerns about delivering a programme that sets an international benchmark for safety, efficiency and operational excellence.”
The poll interviewed more than 750 people across the UAE, revealing that 60 per cent of those polled supported nuclear construction in the Emirates, and 23 per cent were indifferent.
