Areas of Iran have the potential to generate more than 15,000 megawatts of wind energy, according to recent feasibility studies, a report by the Iran Daily has revealed.
Senior Energy Ministry official Hamid Chitchian has said that if wind turbines, each with a generating capacity of 500 megawatts, could be installed nationwide which would allow the country to compete at an international level, and even enter target markets.
According to the report, plans have been drawn up by the energy ministry for a series of turbines with an output of 1,650 megawatts, to be installed ready for operation by March 2014. This, accompanied by additional solar generation, will allow Iran to meet its target of increasing power generation from wind and solar to 5,000 megawatts by the end of 2015.
