Siemens Energy has launched a new direct-drive gearless wind turbine for low to moderate wind speeds, which features a compact permanent magnet generator.
Siemens says the design is simple and robust, resulting at high efficiency even at low loads. With no excitation power, slip rings or excitation control systems, the turbine has a capacity of 2.3 megawatts, and a rotor diameter of 113 metres.
Fitted with new Siemens B55 Quantum blades, the new design features a re-worked blade tip, which minimises loads and also reduces noise levels. At 105 decibels, it’s one of the quietest wind turbines currently on the market.
