Subbiya power plant will come online in 2011.

General Electric will build the new US $2.7 billion Subbiya power plant in Kuwait, according to local press reports.

According to Al Watan, as cited by Reuters, the company, the preferred bidder of the Ministry of Electricity and Water, beat off stiff competition from Germany's Siemens, Japan's Mitsui & Co and Marubeni Corporation, Spain's Iberdrola Ingenieria Y Construccion, and Canada's SNC-Lavalin Limited.

The 2,000MW plant is expected to come on stream in 2011.
